
In 1973, at the age of 13, Richard started learning the bagpipes at the urging of his Scottish mother. He received formal training from Pipe Major Robert Robertson of Houston, Texas. Richard began performing at age 15 as a member of the Alamo City Highlanders Pipes and Drums in San Antonio Texas.
After serving in the military, Richard returned to San Antonio and joined the San Antonio Pipes and Drums under Pipe Major Harrell Sutherland. Some notable performances include University of Texas football half-time, Prince Charles’ United States visit, annual Robert Burns celebrations, and Texas Folklife Festivals.
In 2009, Richard moved to Coos Bay, Oregon where he continues to perform as a soloist.
